Loving Our Chargers

January 19, 2018

Dear Editor,

January 21-27, 2018, is National School Choice Week. This week was created to raise awareness of the kindergarten through 12th grade educational options available to children and families and to spotlight and celebrate those options.  We know that the traditional public schools in Carteret County are the premier schools of choice and we celebrate all of the great achievements made in our schools, these are made by our creative, impassioned students, under the close supervision of their parents and guardians, and guided by the loving hearts and intuitive minds of our teachers, administrators, and staff.

We celebrate that families trust our public school system to provide their children an excellent education regardless of the students’ academic prowess or academic challenges.

We celebrate that out of the 115 public school systems in the state, our county’s high schools are ranked second on the 2017 SAT and the 2017 ACT. These tests compare our students to a national standard and measure their educational gains from pre-kindergarten through graduation, a real testament of the thorough education our students receive and the excellent staff we have throughout all grades and all schools.

We celebrate that all children are accepted in traditional public schools.  There are no lotteries, no tuitions, and no judgements.  We welcome all young people and consider our diverse student body as being a strength, a representation of the world in which they live and a world in which they will one day be employed.

We celebrate that our traditional public school system provides students with broad, diverse, and rich curricula taught through traditional courses and innovative courses that when combined, teach cultural norms we expect all citizens to know and 21st Century skills to prepare them for the world ahead.

We celebrate that our traditional public school system is creating well-rounded students, students who are taught elementary art, music, and physical education by teachers who are degreed in these areas; students who are exposed to highly competitive athletic programs that teach sportsmanship, team work, and other skills sought by employers; students who are part of bands, choral groups, drama productions, and numerous clubs that teach the whole child; and students who are challenged in every class to think and create to prepare them to not simply answer questions, but rather to fully understand the concepts and provide meaningful dialog and input into finding solutions.

We celebrate that our public school teachers are creative and dedicated and provide innovative engaging lessons.  They masterfully combine their passion for teaching with their love for their students.  No one could possibly argue they work so hard while under so much pressure.  Their pay is truly intrinsic.

We celebrate that our students, our parents and guardians, and our entire staff are a united force that is laser focused on making every single student a productive member of our society.

We celebrate the sites that make up the Carteret County Public School System – Atlantic Elementary, Beaufort Elementary, Beaufort Middle, Bogue Sound Elementary, Bridges, Broad Creek Middle, Carteret Preschool Center, Croatan High, Down East Middle, East Carteret High, Harkers Island Elementary, Morehead City Elementary, Morehead City Middle, Morehead City Primary, Newport Elementary, Newport Middle, Smyrna Elementary, West Carteret High and White Oak Elementary.

We celebrate and thank the students, staff members, and families who trust our county’s public school system to provide the premier education to every student who enters our doors.

We celebrate the support our traditional public school system receives from the county as a whole; from the citizens, businesses, parents, guardians; from the Board of Education; and from the County Commissioners.

National School Choice Week … a time to celebrate the premier choice – the Carteret County Public School System.

Sincerely,

Perry Harker, Board of Education Chair

Mat Bottoms, Superintendent
