Project Lead the Way

Welcome to Project Lead the Way

PLTW Gateway to Technology provides a challenging and engaging engineering curriculum for middle school students. Students get rigorous and relevant experiences through activity-, project-, and problem-based learning. They use industry-leading technology to solve problems while gaining skills in communication, collaboration, critical-thinking, and creativity.

Here at Beaufort Middle School, PLTW will feature four courses during the 2019-2020 school year:

  • Design and Modeling (6th grade) - Students will learn about the engineering design process and how it can be used to solve problems for people. 3D Modeling software will be used to create 3D digital models of designed items.

  • Medical Detectives (7th grade) - Students will gain an understanding of Biomedical Engineering through investigations into human vital signs, food borne illnesses, brain anatomy, genetics, and DNA Fingerprinting.

  • Automation and Robotics (8th grade) - Students will learn about mechanical systems, energy transfer, machine automation, and computer control systems. Students use the VEX Robotics® platform to design, build, and program real-world objects such as traffic lights, toll booths, and robotic arms.

  • Computer Science for Innovators and Makers (Elective) - Students will learn about programming for the physical world by lending hardware design and software development. They will design and develop a physical computing device, interactive art installation, or wearable, and plan and develop code for microcontrollers that bring their physical designs to life.

About Mr. Williamson

2019-2020 will be my 16th year working for Carteret County Schools, and my fifth year teaching at Beaufort Middle School. I spent 8 years as a 7th grade science teacher at Broad Creek Middle School and served as Director of Technology and Science for the school system for 3 years. I'm excited to be a part of building the Project Lead the Way program here at BMS.

In 2004, I graduated from UNC-Greensboro with a degree in Middle Grades Science and Math. I received my National Board Certification in Early Adolescent Science in 2008 and renewed in 2019.

My wife Catie is an 8th grade math teacher here at Beaufort Middle School. I have three children, Abby (12) and Tyler (10) , Lucy (1 year old in October) and a ridiculous chihuahua-dachshund mix, Mozzie.
