March 12, 2018

At-Risk Behavior Survey March 19-April 27 for all 8th, 10th and 12th grade students

Dear Parent or Guardian,

During the weeks of March 19 through April 27, 2018 Carteret County Schools, along with the Carteret County Substance Abuse Prevention Task Force is conducting an anonymous survey to learn more about youth alcohol, tobacco, and drug use, risk factors, availability of substances to students in our community and violence.  The survey results will be used in designing and evaluating programs for Carteret County youth.  Students in grades 8, 10, and 12 will be involved in this survey.

The survey chosen to gather this information is the Pride Survey, which was used by our school system in 2016, 2013 and 2009.  In addition, more than 8,000 school systems across the nation have used this survey over the past two decades.  The survey takes approximately 40 minutes to complete and is confidential (your child is never asked for his/her name or any identifying information).  The survey will be scheduled to create minimal disruption.

In order to provide adequate information for program planning, we encourage as many students as possible to participate in this survey.  Completing the survey is completely voluntary.  If you do not wish for your child to complete the survey, please inform our office in writing, before March 19 as the survey will be administered the beginning the week of March 19.

The survey is available in the principal’s office if you would like to review its content.  A summary of the results will be shared with parents.

If you would like further information on the survey, please contact Dr. Sue Kreuser at 728.4583x1112.

Thank you in advance for allowing your child to participate and help support our efforts in designing programs to help students understand that substances can be harmful to their health and safety.

Sincerely,

Dr. Cathy Tomon
